Questions
Asked, and answered.
What people ask first about the game. Where something is not decided yet, the answer says so.
What is Yggdrasil: Shattered Realms?
A persistent online sandbox game set in a broken Norse world. Everyone plays in one shared world of realms joined by gates. There are no classes and no levels: what you wear is what you can do, every weapon is made by a player, and the richest realms are the ones where you can lose what you carry.
When can I play?
There is no release date yet. The game is in active development, and testers will be let in in small waves through a beta. Sign up on the Join page to be told when a wave opens.
What will it run on?
It is built in Unity for desktop computers and is played on a live server. It will be sold on Steam and on this website.
Will it cost money?
The game will cost €2.99, once, on Steam and on this website. No subscription is needed to play. Premium is optional at €19.99 a month, and it can also be bought from other players with silver earned in the game.
Is there a demo?
Yes. A free demo will let you play Kaupholt, the timber town, with its wolves, its practice boss, gathering, crafting up to tier III and the silver market. Your demo character carries on in the full game if you buy it.
Is it pay to win?
No. The game never sells gear, loot boxes or anything that helps in a fight. Every item in the world is made by a player, and anything that can be bought for money can also be earned by playing. Money can save time; it cannot buy power.
Can I earn real money?
It is planned. Every item on a city market will be buyable with silver or with euros, and when another player pays in euros the seller earns real money. Silver itself can never be exchanged for money, and nothing is guaranteed: you earn only when another player wants what you sell. Real-money trading opens only after a legal review, for verified adult players in approved countries, and is not available yet.
What are founder packs?
Packs for players who want to support the game before launch, from $49.99 to $99.99. They include the game, Premium time, early access, founder titles and housing décor, and never gear. They are coming soon; sign up on the Join page to hear when they open.
How do I get stronger without levels?
Through gear. A new character arrives with nothing in hand, and equipping a weapon gives you that weapon’s whole set of abilities. A helm, a chest piece and boots each add one more. Using a weapon, gathering a resource or crafting an item earns fame on the Destiny Board, which opens higher tiers of gear and new spells to choose for the gear you already wear.
Do I lose everything when I die?
Only where you chose to risk it. In the warded realms (tiers I to IV) a death costs nothing. In tier V a player who kills you takes your bag, in tier VI any death drops your bag, and in the lawless realms (tiers VII and VIII) a death drops everything you carry: bag, gear and purse. The finest materials only grow in the dangerous realms.
Can I play without fighting other players?
Yes. Player fighting is switched off in the warded realms, including the starting town. Gathering, refining, crafting and trading are full careers of their own, and monsters live in the wilds for those who want a fight without another player in it.
Where do weapons and armour come from?
Only from players. Monsters and chests give raw materials, never finished gear. Players fell the trees, mine the ore and skin the hides, refine them at the bench and craft every item in the world. Each city has its own market where players set the prices.
Can I own a house or join a guild?
Yes. Houses in the town can be bought with silver and kept with upkeep, and players can found guilds with a shared treasury. A guild can also own a house. Guild-held dungeons and territory are planned for later.
